MEETING DESCRIPTION:

Historically, there has always been a conflict between the built environment and Mother Nature. Every year, hurricanes, tornados, hail, floods, severe winter weather, and wildfire result in billions of dollars in direct and indirect losses to homes and commercial enterprises in all parts of the U.S. Although property insurance may cover many of these costs, businesses that are severely damaged may never fully recover financially due to the loss of management focus, employees, and competitive market share; by many estimates, as many as 1 in 4 businesses forced to close after a disaster never reopen. This is why the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) has developed tools to help equip business owners with resources to become better prepared through business continuity planning practices and engineering guidance for building a stronger new commercial facility when the opportunity arises. Chuck will be discussing who IBHS is and some of the commercial related research they are conducting, providing an overview of their FORTIFIED for Safer Business program that includes voluntary superior construction guidelines for new more resilient structures for small to mid-size businesses, mitigation techniques, including inexpensive low hanging fruit type fixes as well as more long term improvement, and providing information on severe weather emergency planning that will help in the protection of physical assets and improve recovery.

In addition, Gail Moraton, GTBACP member and also an employee at IBHS, will briefly discuss IBHS’ Open for Business®, a free property protection and business continuity toolkit. Learn how Open for Business® can assist small businesses in multi-hazard business continuity planning.

We look forward to seeing you there!
